In 2025, we were awarded a Federal Government Stronger Communities Programme grant to revegetate our former site following it's demolition. This revegetation effort includes a Miyawaki Forest and general planting, and makes use of a total of 1759 native seedlings planted throughout the site.
First things first, you need somewhere to plant. We chose a location over our old compost bays and kitchen bed to make our forest.
Miyawaki Forests are composed of locally native species. To know which species to plant we undertook a survey of nearby remant bushland with the assistance of Dr Grey Coupland.
Get composting! Part of the Miyawaki process involves reinvigorating the soil with a mix of compost and biochar, approximately 500kg/100m2
Earthworks time! The topsoil was scraped away to get rid of all the couch grass. The compost/biochar mixture was then mixed in along with a healthy heaping of beneficial soil microbes. This helps to kickstart a healthy soil microbiome.
Cover the site with mulch. This helps to retain soil moisture and aids seedling survival.
The final step is also the most fun. It's planting time! The MCG invited volunteers to help us plant our forest.
On the 1st of May the MCG hosted a screening of the documentary "Making A Mini-Forest" by Angelina Lee. We learnt about the history of Miyawaki Forests and the global movement planting them in cities all over the world.
On May 9 2026, we hosted the planting day for the Miyawaki Forest portion of our revegetation efforts.
You can keep up to date with the state of the forest on our social media pages!
